China Has World's Fastest Computers Again
China's reign as the nation with the fastest computers in the world continues. The nation's Tianhe-2 supercomputer topped the latest TOP500 list, its sixth consecutive time in the No. 1 slot, according to a release by TOP500.org. Overall, China has 109 of the world's fastest high-performance computers, a huge surge from 37 on the June 2015 list. The US still has the most supercomputers on the list with 200 HPC systems, but that's down from 231 in July. It's also the fewest US supercomputers since the list began in 1993.

A new supercomputer deployed by the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre (CSCS) will allow the country's national weather service to provide more-detailed and accurate weather forecasts. The Cray CS-Storm cluster now used by MeteoSwiss is 40 times more powerful than its existing high-performance computing system and allows the weather service to build faster, more-detailed weather models. Cray CS-Storm can also produce a larger number of daily forecasts—up to eight per day.

For our October "Community Choice" Project of the Month, the community elected fre:ac, a free audio converter and CD ripper with support for various popular formats and encoders. It currently converts between MP3, MP4/M4A, WMA, Ogg Vorbis, FLAC, AAC, WAV, and Bonk formats. With fre:ac you can easily rip your audio CDs to MP3 or WMA files for use with your hardware player. You can also convert files that do not play with other audio software, and even convert whole music libraries while retaining the folder and filename structure. The integrated CD ripper supports the CDDB/freedb online CD database, and will automatically query song information and write it to ID3v2 or other title information tags

Southern Methodist University (SMU) researchers say they have developed three drug-like compounds that could improve survival rates of prostate cancer patients. The compounds could be developed into medicine that targets P-gp, a protein responsible for resistance to chemotherapy. Scientists used SMU's Intel Xeon-driven ManeFrame high-performance computer to create a first-ever virtual model that could be tested with the compounds.

The CA/BF, the governing body that manages the use of SSL certificates, has determined that public CAs will no longer issue certificates with internal names after November 2015. The logic for using SSL certificates has not changed, but organizations will have to adopt new ways of issuing them.
These rule changes do not mean that internal certificates are no longer available for use, only that public CAs cannot issue certificates with internal names that are not authenticated. Although running your own CA might sound appealing, to those inclined to the do-it-yourself (DIY) approach to IT operations, there are a number of factors to consider.

David Bolton redid the chart as a linear Y axis using the data points for the years 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010 and 2014 so that instead of a straight logarithmic line, it shows the true nature of the increase.
